Where game becomes life

S.R.ASHOK KUMAR

Sathyaraj turns producer with Lee, starring son Sibi and Nila.

SHOT IN CROWDED AREAS: Lee

The palatial house on the outskirts of Chennai is the spot where the `Lee' crew was busy shooting. The floor, covered with the dried stalk of harvested crop, was not firm but then one wouldn't get hurt even if one falls. Sibi (hero) and Nila (heroine) were dancing in the middle of it.

Director Prabhu Solomon was instructing his cameraman Rajesh Yadhav about the angle. One caught up with the director after the shot was through. "This is a patch up for what was shot in Mysore," he explained. "We have finished shooting and wish to release the film in a few weeks. Editing, dubbing and re-recording are going on," he said.

After taking his lunch, comprising soup and fresh salad, he asked the cinematographer to sit with him to plan for the next few shots.

Football player

So what is the story about? The film is centred on the life of a football player. "Prakash Raj dons a positive role, that of a coach. We have a lot of talent in our midst but the players are not getting their due. Those who fail to reward the talented are unfit to occupy positions of power — this sums up the film. Of course it is interspersed with sizzling action," Solomon said.

The film has been shot in 100 different locations, all congested, in Chennai city. The director and the cinematographer mingled in the crowd to shoot. "In fact we shot a chase with gun shots for six days on Anna Salai — between Spencer Plaza and Gemini Circle that too in the peak hours. Some people in fact called the police who reassured them that it was a film shooting. I was moved by the affection showered by the people of Ayodhya Kuppam, a sensitive area.

Sibi said that he was happy with the way the film had emerged "One can see a different action hero in me. The credit goes to the director for that. It has a good mix of sentiment and entertainment too."

The film, incidentally, is the maiden production venture of actor Sathyaraj, Sibi's father. Artistes have been roped in from theatre and Koothupattarai. The main role is done by Zahir, who is now working in the film `Sholay' (directed by Ram Gopal Varma). Music is by D.Imman, Harsha is editor and art has been handled by Vairabalan.
