`Pulijanmam Oru Puravritham,' a `nrithashilpa' by artistes of Lasya College of Music and Dance at Pilathara in Kannur, was a new experiment in blending classical dance, folk dance and Theyyam for a dance drama.
`Pulijanmam'
The dance form is all set to draw the attention of dance lovers as it comes after `Pulijanmam,' a cinema by Priyanandanan based on a play by N. Prabhakaran.
Like the movie and the drama, `Pulijanmam Oru Puravritham' is based on the popular myth of `Thondachan Theyyam.' The Theyyam ritually represents the tale of Thondachan, or `Karitheyyam' in popular parlance, who is worshipped and is the subject of folk and ritual performances in many Hindu shrines and temples.
Kalamandalam Latha, Principal of the school, who has choreographed the dance drama, says she has adopted techniques from folk rituals such as Theyyam and Chimmanakkali, Kalaripayattu and classical art forms such as Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam.
The script of the two-hour long programme was written by Manikanda Das while its music was composed by Harippad K.P.N. Pillai.
