TASTING SUCCESS AS PRODUCER: Vikram Krishna
He wanted to be an actor but brother Vishal literally stole the show giving hit after hit. But Vikram Krishna is not complaining. He is in fact elated with his sibling's stupendous success and is concentrating on the vital part, production. Eldest son of producer G.K.Reddy, Vikram is already making strides in Tamil and Telugu fields. Excerpts from an interview: Entry into cinema was not a difficult proposition. Was it?
No. And I had worked with my father on the productions of many of his films such as `I love India,' `Mahaprabhu' and a few Telugu ones. I liked cinema and decided to try my luck as an actor. I did a couple of movies but turned producer and started my own production house, G. K. Film Corporation. Both `Sandakozhi' and `Thimiru,' turned out to be box office hits.
What were the films you acted in?
I worked with the great Sivaji Ganesan in `Poo Parikka Varugirom' directed by A. Venkatesh. Then I did `Love Marriage' by director K.Subash. The next assignment was `Annan Thangachi.' Both films flopped and I decided to switch lanes. Were you disappointed? Yes, because I enjoyed acting. But I am happy to be part of the film industry as a producer.
What about character roles?
I would love to do any role that is good and exciting. How do you feel about Vishal's success?
It is an understatement to say that I am happy. I am extremely proud of his success.
What about direction?
Not now. My plan is to expand the business. My brother and I are planning to produce more movies in different languages giving a chance to more newcomers, be it a director or an actor. I am planning to enter the Hindi film industry next year with `Sandakozhi.' Who are the directors you would like to work with?
I would love to produce movies with most of the mainstream directors in the Tamil film industry. But my favourite project (and Vishal's too) would be with director Ram Gopal Varma.
What about producing films that could win awards at the national level?
That is certainly one of my aims. But I don't want to rush. My first priority was to make my brother a successful hero in Tamil and Telugu films and that has been achieved. My next step will be to build my company into a production house of good and successful films. I can do this by producing meaningful films in all regional languages. There are genres untouched by our filmmakers, I would like to take them up.
What are your future plans?
Currently my focus is `Sathyam' in Tamil, directed by new director A. Rajsekhar with Vishal in the lead. It is an interesting script in which Vishal plays a cop for the first time. The other artistes are Trisha and Upendra (leading Kannada actor). I am also producing the dubbed version of Vishal's `Thamirabarani' in Telugu, renamed `Barani,' which will be released on Telugu New Year's day. A few more projects are also in the pipeline.
