Commendable effort -- Sadhanai

TOUCHING: Sadhanai.

Sadhanai

Genre: Social drama
Director: Kishan
Cast: Kishan, Jackie Shroff, Thara, Sourav Sukla and Jayashree.
Storyline: How a slum boy picks up the challenge and writes the 10th standard examination.
Bottomline: Good film with a message.

It is really a commendable job that nine-year old Kishan has done directing Sadhanai, full-length feature film. The simple story touches one's heart and one cannot help getting involved with the characters.

The story is about Slum, a boy who lives with his grandmother. His daily work is to pick rags from the streets. He has an encounter with a boy who taunts him about not going to school. Stung, Slum takes it up as a challenge and goes about getting admission into school and sits for examination. But it is not easy.

Kishan, with the experience of 24 films and 1,000 serials plays Slum with ιlan. Only four characters matter in the film — Jackie Shroff, who plays Chief Minister, and Thara as the teacher have come up with remarkable performances. Sourav Shukla and Jayashree also have done a good job.

The screenplay and dialogues by J. Saravanan are neat.

Premkumar and Ravi Dattatreya, who have composed the music, should have concentrated a little more on re-recording. Mathew Rajan and Jayan have made significant contribution through their camera.

The best among the four songs is `Mudiyum Mudiyum' sung by S.P.Balasubramaniam.

Of course there are slips but coming from such a young filmmaker, the effort is indeed remarkable.

And it is not mere entertainment. Kishan has a message for his friends — with perseverance you can achieve anything.

S.R.ASHOK KUMAR
