TOP SCORER: Ramesh Narayan is on a high.
Ramesh Narayan's joy was trebled when the Kerala State film awards were announced. In addition to winning the award for the best music director for `Rathrimazha,' the awards for the best singers were bagged by Srinivas and Sujatha for the same film, for the same song - `Bansuri sruthi pole... '
Rare honour
Rarely has a single film dominated the State awards in the music category the way `Rathrimazha' did. "I am happy that the singers and composer have been rewarded for the same song; that, I feel, is the way it should be," says Ramesh, for whom this is the second State award in a row, having won the award for the best background score last year, for `Saira.' "Very often, the composer who extracts the best out of a singer is ignored."
He says he has been able to give his best for `Rathrimazha' because the film's director Lenin Rajendran appreciated good music. "Lenin has shot the song sequences of the movie beautifully. The visualisation of a song is also important these days and I am glad the songs look good."
Although the film has not yet been released, its songs have been received well by music lovers.
"But when I was composing the songs of `Rathrimazha,' I thought it was the solo by Sujatha, `Aalolam kanmani... ,' that would be a hit. Now it seems people like `Bansuri... ' more. I must say that both Srnivas and Sujatha have sung it brilliantly. I chose them for this song because their voices have a romantic tone."
And Ramesh himself has sung a khayal. Ramesh has never been the busiest composer around. But he has done some fine work, in films like `Garshom' (`Parayan maranna... '), `Meghamalhar' (`Oru narupushpamai... ') and `Makalkku' (`Chanchadi... ' and `Mukilin makale... ').
"It felt great when `Oru narupushpamai... ' became the most popular number of that time; it was rendered superbly by Yesudas. My confidence got a boost when my guru, Pandit Jasraj complimented me after he heard `Parayan maranna... ,' my first ever composition for a film. He was impressed with the way I used raga Jog for that song."
Ramesh is hopeful about the songs he has composed for `Paradeshi' and `Arunam.' "So far I have done music for just over a dozen movies; I am not greedy. Though it gives me gratification as a creator when I compose songs, my first love continues to be Hindustani music. I am happiest when I perform."
