CHARMING PERFORMANCE: Darshana Jhaveri is the disciple of the legendary Guru Bipin Singh.
Darshana Jhaveri, the youngest of the famed Jhaveri sisters, enthralled the audience with her lecture demonstration and Manipuri dance recital.
The disciple of the legendary Guru Bipin Singh, Darshana's recital began with `Jugal Nartan,' which depicted the dance of Krishna and Radha. `Pum chalom' by Thomba Singh displayed the vigour and perseverance needed for this highly demanding piece, where the dancer took spiral movements as he played on the drum.
Graceful expression
Darshana with her subtle and graceful expressions and movements presented `nritta' in `Swara Prabandha' in the rhythm pattern `Surfak' of 10 beats. The dancers had kept the aharya simple, and avoided the broad cylindrical skirts used by the female dancers.
It was charming to see Darshana and her disciple Anasuya Devi portray a sophisticated play of drums in `Mridang vaadan' in Dasakosh taal of seven beats. The artistes used the same hand alternately on the two sides of the `pom' to produce a highly striking effect.
In a thematic piece, Darshana presented the creation of the human body, cloth weaving and so on with the simplest of mudras and expression. The characteristic spiral flowing movements of the lasya aspect of the dance was a true delight. The highlight of the programme was `Gop Raas,' which saw Balram and Krishna at a ball game.
Darsana's Uthama (Khandita) nayika was dignified and subdued in her display of dejection in the ashtapadi `Yahi madhava.'
Sublime expression of love
Maintaining a serene expression on, Darshana portrayed the sublime expression of love of Krishna towards Radha. Atharshi Chatterjee with her emotive voice added richness to this piece.
The last piece was the `Khubak Ishai,' which showed the joyous mood in the `Rathyatra' where idols are taken out with claps and cheers. Darsana showed how the dance form with its down-to- earth aesthetics still appeals with its variety. The event was organised by Spicmacay and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
