ELEGANT CREATIONS: At C.P.Ramaswami Road.
A celebration of grass, cane and bamboo, straw, reeds, jute and nature's colours extracted from flower, bark, leaf and pollen is the focus of two separate handicraft exhibitions now on view in the city.
While Mrignayanee's exhibition highlights the muted beauty of vegetable dyed saris and fabric, the North Eastern Craft Fair welcomes you to a world crafted in cane and bamboo.
Craft skill
The products from the North-East reflect a high degree of craft skills and versatility. The ethereal beauty and delicacy of vegetable dyed Chanderis and Maheswaris are the highlights of the Mrignayanee exhibition (Guild of Service, Casa Major Road, Egmore). The typically bordered saris, dupattas and fabric come in a spectrum of colours block printed with intricate designs.
Jute and bamboo curtains are the other products at the exhibition, which concludes on February 18. Cane and bamboo hold sway at the North East Crafts Fair (Corporation Community Centre, C.P.Ramaswami Road, Alwarpet), which has been sponsored by the office of the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Among the eye-catching items are delicately crafted screens from Tripura, elegant sofa sets, `moorhas' from Assam, and Kuana grass mattresses and cushions from Manipur.
Hand woven saris, dupattas and fabric from Manipur promise ideal summer wear. The fair is on view till February 25.
