Good in patches -- Muruga
ATTEMPTING A NEW LOOK: Muruga
Muruga
Genre: Romance
Director: R.T.Nesan
Cast: Ashok, Sruthi Sharma, Samiksha, Vadivelu, Mahadevan, Riyaz Khan, Vincent Asokan and Sudha.
Storyline: Love story, interspersed with twists.
Bottomline: Screenplay is a let down
There may not be anything extraordinary about the love story that Cocktail Dream Films' "Muruga" presents but it has many interesting elements. The director, r.t.Nesan, has tried to give the formula a new look but he should have worked on the screenplay. Murugan (Ashok) loves Amudha (Sruthi Sharma), daughter of a big shot. The father Vinayaka Murthy (Mahadevan) and his goondas Selvam (Riyaz Khan) and Mayilravanan (Vincent Asokan) destroy a studio, where they find a picture of the girl. Imagine their wrath when they come to know that Murugan is in love with Amudha. The boy is beaten up and sent out of their village.
Circumstances bring Amudha and Murugan to the city where they fall in love again with the same gang hot on their heels.
Both Ashok and Sruthi Sharma show potential. Ashok, especially, makes good use of the opportunity. Only he should concentrate on fighting. Vadivelu makes a futile attempt at humour. Vincent Asokan proves himself in a meaty role. Mahadevan is the apt choice for the father role and Riyaz Khan acquits himself well. Sudha as the mother of Murugan is adequate. Karthick Raja's music is really good, impressive in the background score too. Of the five songs, written by Na. Muthukumar, three "En Kadhali" (Karthik), Pollatha Kriukku" (Udhith Narayanan, Sreya Kous), and Chinnachiru Chittae (Vineeth Srinivasan and Sangeetha) are catchy. Camera work by N. Padmesh is above average. If only director r.t.Nesan, who is also in charge of story, screenplay and dialogue (a plus point) had taken more effort to make the film interesting, it would have become a winning proposition.
