Master of laya, endearing guru

Rajappa Iyer.

Laya Pithamaha and Sangeetha Kala Acharya Kumbakonam Rajappa Iyer, passed away on March 5 leaving hundreds of mridangam and ghatam vidwans mourning. After all, he was the Aasan for all of them, moulding and honing their skills with such dedication. Although as musician and guru, he was extraordinary, as a man he was pure and simple. A man of integrity and an endearing personality, he took many into his fold and held them securely by the force of love.

Every year, on Vijayadasami day this master came up with a special korvai/mora shining with novelty, laya precision and depth. He will be remembered for the beats of pure laya that he has made immortal.

S.SIVAKUMAR
