BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE Souraja Tagore and Milan Adhikari.
The Bharatanatyam solo by Souraja Tagore interspersed with a few duets with Milan Adhikari, both from Kolkata, marked the Founder's Day celebration of Visakha Music and Dance Academy organised in its Kalabharati auditorium on Saturday last. A scion of the Tagore family of artistes and great connoisseurs of classical arts, Souraja imbibed the finest of the nuances of the art from Guru Abhoy Pal at Kolkata with the aid of CCRT National and West Bengal Sangeet Natak Academy scholarships. She got enough opportunities to extensively tour not only her home State but also various places in the country. She has also performed at the Dover Lance Dance Fest, Ganga Mahotsav, Anamika Kala Sangham and won many a laurel.
Starting with `Ganapathistuti' and ending with a `tillana' in Surati in Talamalika in strict adherence to the Bharatanatyam format, Souraja seemed to be transliterating the sahitya and `bhavas' into vibrant vocabulary of classical dance.
Milan too was brilliant in his presentations (two solos and two along with Souraja). While Guru Pal expertly wielded the cymbals, vocals by Sukumar Kutty in the company of M. Sankar on mridangam, A. Satyavishal on violin and S. Kumar on flute were scintillating.
At the meeting earlier held with the VMDA president C.S.N. Raju in the chair, founder trustees D.V. Subba Rao and T.S. Rajeswaran gave away the annual Pratibha Puraskars, B. Lakshmi Suryateja (vocal), D. Choodamani (dance), P. Gnanadev (violin), P. Jayadev (mridangam) and B. Kartik (keyboard). P.V.C. proposed a vote of thanks.
