Maestro's choice

G. JAYAKUMAR

R.K. Srikantan captivated rasikas with kritis of Purandaradasa.

It was a treat for music lovers as octogenarian R.K. Srikantan captivated the audience with kritis of Purandaradasa. According to the vocalist, Purandaradasa symbolises "a perfect happy life and realisation of god."

Organised by Sri Swati Tirunal Sangita Sabha at Kathika Tirunal Theatre in the capital city, Srikantan opened his three-hour concert with `Ugabhoga' in Mohanam set to Khandachappu talam. He followed it up with the same composition in Natta, and Vandishusudha, again set to Khandachappu talam.

Highlight

The highlight of the evening was a ragam tanam pallavi that brought to fore the pada laya vinyasam. He presented an elaborate raga alapanam of Todi. For pallavi, he chose the sahitya `Hari Nama.'

He repeated the line in different kalas with niraval and kalpanaswaras, keeping intact the tradition of Carnatic music, thereby displaying his strict adherence to sampradayam. The hallmark of the presentation was sruthi sudhatha and bhava.

S.R. Mahadeva Sarma gave able support on the violin. The thaniavarthanam was performed by Gurucharan on the mridangam and Uduppi Sridhar on the ghatam.

R.K.Srikantan, who has been popularising Purandaradasa's kritis, also rendered `Guruvina gulama' (Pantuvarali), `Adinora ranga' based on Kaliyamardhanam (Arabhi), `Venkatesa' (Anandabhairavi), `Kande karunanidhi' on Hampi Virupaksha (Mayamalavagoula), `Rama embuva yeruda' (Darbar) and `Pokadhirelo' (Sankarabharanam).

He concluded with a few thukkadas. He was provided vocal support by his son, Ramakanth.
