Anitha Hariharan.
Tall and elegant Anitha Hariharan, a software engineer, was a winner in her Bharatanatyam show.
She appears to have mastered the art, going by her mature performance at Ravindra Bharati last week. The elegance in her style was displayed in striking statuesque postures as part of Abhinaya in varnam and other pieces and the many jatis she went through revealed her learning. She learned the art from Rajeswari Sainath of Sruthi Laya Kendra.
With a traditional opening with Alaripu and Jathiswaram in Rasali, revealing her ease in complex footwork patterns, she appeared to have well exercised to take up longish varnam Suddha Dhanyasi as her major showpiece.
It was of the Tamil composition - Aadum Mayil Mel Varuvan' describing Shanmuga, boss of celestial army and his heroics.
This revealed Anitha's ability to narrate the story well through her explicit mime, combining it at times with good footwork spells in complex movements.
She then presented an Annamacharya composition from one of the ballets she was presenting along with her guru - Okaparikokapari in Kharaharpriya and a Thillana in Amritavarshini closed her show.
Solo fare
Another impressive Bharatantyam solo was that of Nymisha, disciple of veteran Guru, Hemamalini Arni of Vazhvoor bani, at the same venue on a different day.
Nymisha too is graceful and is said to be good at sports and martial arts and has won many medals. She opened her performance with Vatapi in Hamsadhwani and then did the traditional Alarippu in Tisram.
The varnam she chose was a ragamalika piece Patchai Mamalaipol in Tamil that eulogised Lord Vishnu and his avatar Srikrishna.
The theme presents a devotee praying before God Ranganatha to give him eternal peace in His realm. Nymisha did a good mime matching the expressive rendition by vocalist Swetha Prasad, an ace singer.
Her presentation of the three essentials of a dance - nritta, nritya and abhinaya, was marked by ease and spontaneity. The Tandava dance of Lord Siva came alive in her performance of the number Anandanatanam in Poorvikalyani.
Childhood deeds of Krishna in Krishna Nee Begane in Yamuna Kalyani and a Tillana in Hindolam marked the end part of the show. Raghunandan conducted the recital crisply.
