Nutshell

Renovation

A major renovation work, estimated to cost around Rs. 80 lakhs, is to be undertaken at Oppiliappan temple, near Kumbakonam. The plan is to construct a roof over the outer `prakaram' — a need keenly felt during the rainy season, especially by the devotees who want to fulfil their vow to have the deity taken around the shrine in the golden chariot — and to adorn the enclosed prakaram with paintings of the deities enshrined in the 108 Divya Desams. According to Executive Officer T.Vijayakumar, the work has been divided into 108 units, each unit estimated to cost Rs. 75,000. Details can be had from the Assistant Commissioner/Executive Officer, Oppiliappan Temple, Tirunageswaram (Pin: 612 204).
