Wholesome treat of Kuchipudi

The artistes portrayed their roles while dancing with felicitous charm.

Members of Kuchipudi Kalakshetra, an offshoot of Vempati Chinnasatyam's Kuchipudi Art Academy of Chennai, in association with the cultural wing Tharang of NSTL, staged a dance ballet `Chandalika' in the Mansi Auditorium of the National Laboratory on Wednesday last.
An adaptation of the original in Bengali by Rabindranath Tagore into Telugu by writer-poet S.V. Bhujangaraya Sarma, it was set to exquisite music by Mallik, choreographed by Padmabhushan Vempati and was staged under the aegis of his Academy.
It depicts the plight of a young girl from an `untouchable community' and her deliverance by a Bouddha Bikshu Anand.
Organised by Vempati's disciple Divya Yeluri who runs the Nritya Madhavi Dance School in New Jersey, it had herself in the title role, Y. Hanumantha Rao as Anand, N.N.V. Satyabhanu as Maya, (a witch who brings back Anand by using her wiles), Sumathi and Himabindu as flower sellers, Ganga Bhavani, Sarada, Kalyani, Sruthi and Chandini as Milk Maids, Viswa Santhi, Swarna Latha, Kiranmayi and Subbaraju as bangle sellers, Pavan, K.V. Ramana and Rajesh as soilders, Rajesh and Krishna as Bouddha Biskhus (all pupils of the Visakhapatnam Kalakshetra).
All of them portrayed their roles while dancing with felicitous charm, it turned out to be a wholesome treat of Kuchipudi tradition. Bhanu as Maya was the cynosure of the show.
Principal of the Kalakshetra Hari Rama Murty provided scintillating nattuvangam in the company of evocative vocals by K. Suryanarayana and K. Lakshmi Narasamma, L. Suryakanthilal on mridangam, Jagannadha Rao on tabla, veteran G. Nagarajan on flute, R. Sudhakar on veena and J. Chandramouli on violin. Chiranjivi, Surya Rao and Sudha provided make-up.
