Hyderabad State, at one time, was a confluence of cultures of both north and south. It came to be known as Deccan culture. After the formation of Andhra Pradesh, there was need to project the composite culture of the past and hence Kathak Kalakshetra, a well known dance organisation run by exponent of Kathak Anjibabu and the State Department of Culture together drew a plan almost 15 years ago to stage a grand show at the heritage centre, Quli Qutubshah tombs. This time the festival venue was shifted from the tombs to Ravindra Bharati for the convenience of dance lovers. This year's Deccan Dance Festival had a good mixture of reputed artistes presenting their respective styles - Sushmita Chatterjee from Kathak field of dance, Bimbavati representing Manipuri style, Meenakshi Chittaranjan with Bharatanatyam, Pallavi Krishnan of Kerala, a Mohini Attam artiste, Shobha Naidu, exponent of Kuchipudi and Sujata Mohapatra and her husband Ratikant (Odissi style).
Sushmita is a Kolkota based artiste who gave the inaugural show of the three-day festival.
She is the disciple of Guru Bandana Sen of Lucknow gharana, but she continued her learning under some renowned gurus like Pt.Birju Maharaj. As she grew up she too became a choreographer and conductor herself.
Some of her themes have titles like Chutti Chutti, Chaitra Abasan and Darpan. For this occasion she chose a theme on Lord Siva.
She began with a Shiva Stotra - Namami Sivam that gave her opportunity to come out with a dance format of tandava dance of the Lord too.
The technical part that accompanied these thematic narrations included slow foot work in Teen Tal that accentuated into a fast pace in Drut phase with excellent variations. It was a brisk and agile show.
