TAKE YOUR PICK: At the fairs.
Two All India Crafts Exhibitions are currently on at Sri Sankara Hall (TTK Road, Teynampet) and Corporation Community Hall (CP Ramaswami Road, Alwarpet). And there is a third one going on Khadi Expo, presented by the Rural Employment Generation Policy group and sponsored by KVIC at Valluvar Kottam.
Apart from the impressive array of khadi textiles and craft products at the Khadi Expo, there are a variety of other items. From Mango fruit bars, papads, pickles and bamboo screens to towels and embroidered juttis. The painted terracotta lamps, jars, vases from Kolkata are as charming as the boldly-coloured tea and coffee mugs from Karnataka. West Bengal's attractive reed mats, dhurries, kantha saris and fabrics are also on display.
Variety aplenty
At the Sankara Hall, there are an assortment of handloom textiles, handcrafted items, paintings, wood panels, Jaipur's whitewood jaali work elephants and Bhagalpur's silk fabric and block prints.
The Corporation Community Hall showcases some interesting, etched and painted copper vessels from Rajasthan, a range of Rajasthani jharokhas, cedar wood statuettes, Mirzapur dhurries, Kashmiri and Saharanpuri furniture items. All three exhibitions conclude on March 25.
