"I feel it is a great honour to receive the Madhavapeddi award as it comes from the worthy son of worthy parents. In the days when some people send their parents to old age homes, here is a son who has instituted awards in memory of his parents and what more [do] we need than to receive such an award," said veteran actor Anjali Devi commending Madhavapeddi Murthy, renowned Kuchipudi exponent for giving the awards in the name of his parents Madhavapeddi Satyam and Madhavapeddi Prabhavathi.
While Anjali Devi is the recipient of Madhavapeddi Prabhavathi award, veteran singer P. Susheela received the Madhavapeddi Satyam award.
Awards presented
The awards were presented on March 17 at a glittering function at Vani Mahal, Chennai. M. Subramanian, Mayor, Chennai Corporation, M. Balamuralikrishna and Shyam Avvari, Phoenix, U.S. were the chief guests.
Anjali Devi recalled that Madhavapeddi Satyam had sung for films made by Anjali Pictures. "I think these awards are meant basically for musicians and dancers, as Madhavapeddi Satyam was a singer and his son, a dancer. I think they have chosen me for this award since my husband (P. Adi Narayana Rao) was a music director or maybe because I am a dancer and started my career on stage and cinema," she said after receiving the award from Balamuralikrishna.
P. Susheela, who became nostalgic, lauded the efforts of Madhavapeddi Murthy and his Siva Foundation for the annual event.
Balamuralikrishna, pointing to the other popular singers present at the function, said that he was happy to be in the company of three renowned singers P. Susheela, S. Janaki and Vani Jairam with whom he had the fortune of singing in films. "I have also acted in a film with Anjali Devi," he said.
Recalling that he had sung with Madhavapeddi Satyam too, he said that Satyam treated him like a son.
Apart from the two recipients, eminent personalities Dr. S.V. Satyanarayana, ortho surgeon; Saraswati, director, Vipanchee Natyalaya, and visiting faculty at the University of Hyderabad; vocalist Rajkumar Bharati, grandson of Subramanya Bharati and Shobha Natarajan, artistic director, Samskriti, Chicago were honoured with the Siva Foundation Awards.
Shobha Natarajan was the compere at the function.
The award was posthumously given to veteran Kuchipudi guru and director, Narthanam, C. Durga Devi, who passed away recently and it was received by her son, Krishna.
The awards presentation ceremony was preceded by a scintillating cultural event that had a percussion show by drummer Shanker and his young disciples, a classical dance by the students of Vipanchee Natyalaya and Siva Foundation and a mimicry and parody songs by `Reverse gear' M. Guruswamy and A.Vinod Kumar of Hyderabad.
