FULL OF EXPRESSION Subaja Mohapatra.
Orissa Government's Department of Culture and the Bhubaneswar Music Circle jointly organised a cultural show in memory of Padma Shri Pankaj Charan Das, who is revered as the `guru of gurus' in Odissi dance. Pankaj Charan's daughter Bijaylaxmi Das and Kelucharan's daughter-in-law Sujata Mohapatra paid rich tributes to the `adi guru' through their impressive performances. But it was Sujata who stole the limelight that evening. Commencing her concert with the guru vandana set to the raga `megha', she presented `Hamsadhwani pallabi', a pure dance number, one of the classic choreographic creations of Kelucharan. Perfectly tuned to the lyrical and rhythmic music and movements, Sujata showed that her body language coupled with the sculpture's poses and an intricate footwork were meant for effectively communicating Kelucharan's poetic dance vocabulary.
In her `abhinaya' number `Durga' that described the different weapons being held by the Goddess in the 10 hands, Sujata demonstrated her ability to transform herself quietly from one `bhava' to another within a second. While `Durga' was choreographed by her guru and father-in-law, its soul-stirring music was composed by Kolkata's veteran singer-composer Debasish Sarkar. Vocalist Bijay Kumar Jena and percussionists duo Sachidananda Das and Ekalabya Muduli did a splendid job with their articulation.
