Stylised recital

The dancers of Kathak Kendra, Delhi, presented a recital that balanced technique and grace.



TECHNIQUE AND GRACE: The grace of the Lucknow school was evident in the performance.

A programme presented by Kathak Kendra, Delhi, at Kerala Fine Arts Society, drew a huge crowd, which vouched for the fact that this dance form, performed less in the south, has the potential to relate easily to the audience. The performance was organised as part of a series conducted in collaboration with the Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi in different cities in Kerala.

Group choreography

A group choreography `Aum,' directed by Jai Kishan Maharaj, was featured as the first item of the evening. The highly stylised dance movements delineated the trinity according to the traditional iconography of each. The piece de resistance was the performance by Harish Gangani.

Harish proved himself the true heir to a rich legacy. His improvisations, amazing pirouettes and footwork were a marvel to the audience. The complex rhythm cycles and bols were handled with dexterity and strict adherence to rhythm. Fluid dance movements and sparkling footwork marked the success of a choreographed piece `Salaami.'

The grace of the Lucknow school, marked by subtle abhinaya and grace were evident, in the piece.

Melodic, rhythmic aspects

`Sargam,' again a piece by Jai Kishan Maharaj, highlighted the melodic and the rhythmic aspects of the dancers.

Veteran dancer Krishan Mohan Mishra presented the last solo item of the evening in teental. His impromptu recitation of bols (parhant) and dance, with command over layakari and tayyari were inspiring. There were moments of stillness from the percussionists where `parmelu' bols (variety sounds with the anklets) resounded through the auditorium and this culminated in a competitive jugalbandi. His performance balanced technical perfection with innate grace.
