KATHAKALI FIESTA: `Natyathridayi' saw some of the artistes enacting certain major characters for the first time in their career.
It was a Kathakali bonanza for lovers of the art form at Karalmanna as a three-day Kathakali festival was organised by Cherpulassery grama panchayat and Kunju Nair Memorial Trust.
Called `Natyathridayi,' the festival showcased the talents of up-and-coming artistes.
Organised for artistes below 45, `Natyathridayi' saw some of the artistes enacting certain major characters for the first time in their career. The event also witnessed maestros of the art form like Kottakkal Sivaraman, Kalamandalam K.G. Vasudevan, Kottakkal Chandrasekhara Warrier and Sadanam Narayanan Nambuthiri being honoured.
`Santhanagopalam,' penned by Mandavappalli Ittyraricha Menon, was the first play to be performed. Bhakti towards Lord Krishna is the theme of the play. Sadanam Narayanan Nambuthiri played the lead role of `Brahmana.'
Nambuthiri's acting prowess came to fore as he depicted the Brahmin's grief on the death of his children. His attam with Arjuna threw light on his artistic prowess. Kalamandalam Pradeep, a promising artiste, donned the role of Arjuna.
Kalamandalam Mohanakrishnan was the main singer, while Kalamandalam Rajesh Menon was his deputy. M. R. Rajan's award winning documentary, `Minukku' on Kottakkal Sivaraman was screened.
Sadanam Bhasi and Ettumanur P. Kannan staged `Narakasuravadham,' written by Karthika Thirunal.
The story, which narrates the vengeance of Narakasura, saw Bhasi enacting Lalita, as Kannan donned the role of the angry Narakasura.
Kalanilayam Madhumohan played Jayantha and Devendra beautifully. Palanad Divakaran and Sadanam Sivadas rendered the lyrics in style.
Pandavas in exile
`Bakavadham,' which depicts the life of the Pandavas in exile, had Kalamandalam Shanmughan and Kalamandalam Vijayakumar playing the lead.
The third scene, which shows Bhima and Hidumbi expressing their love for each other, was well enacted. Although it was Vijayakumar's `arangettam' in the role of Hidumbi, Vijayakumar carried the role well.
Nedumpally Rammohan and Rajesh Menon handled the music department. Kalamandalam Nandakumar was the main chenda performer for the festival.
His sense of thala played an important role in making the festival a success.
