Fused to melody
Darb Al-Harir, a fusion music band enthralled the audience with its soulful performance at Alliance Française de Delhi recently.
This Arabic, Indian and Spanish musical programme was based on traditional Sufi poetry of love, nature and philosophy from the 7th Century.
Though the text was ancient, the poetry was relevant to the present.
The show began with the melodic music of sitar played by Lakha Versi.
It was followed by a tabla interlude by Sanjay Shejwalkar from Ahmedabad.
Soon the evening air was filled with music.
Interesting experience
Manuel Aguilar, who hails from Spain, and Meryem Koufi, an Algerian, rendered the vocals. The Indian music with Spanish text was an interesting experience. Nishith Mehta, founder of Musica Productions, who has in-depth knowledge of sounds, traditions and musical instruments of tribal areas, composed the music.
D.K. Chauhan made the evening even more melodious, when he played some outstanding notes on the shehnai and the santoor.
The crowd responded well, as when Vijay Sant set his fingers on the sitar, the whole atmosphere echoed with loud applause.
From guitar to sitar and harmonium to flute one could hear all kinds of sounds blended to cathcy rhythms in one room. The show clearly signified that music is everywhere.
The series of presentations included Boaz, which means a quest to discover one's own self. While "Ya koulla koulli" symbolised love and passion, "Sirrou'l husni" was an expression of beauty. And there were many more.
With the beats of nagada and drums, one could feel the electricity on stage.
Meanwhile, the sound of ghungroo and thumping of earthen vessels made the atmosphere pleasing.
The night came to a close with a spiritual song "Rama Dhani".
