Dance
Sarukkai, sarukkal: A Tamil term for the Bharatanatyam step in which the leg is pushed back along the floor in a sliding motion. `Sarukkal' literally means to drag or slip.
Music
Gharana: School or style. While the main genres of music are classified as Hindustani and Carnatic, there are schools of music associated with individuals who have had a major impact on the performance styles, evolving a style of their own. These schools, or gharanas (from the Hindi `ghar' or home, referring to the guru's `gurukul' or family) are usually not named after the individuals who founded them but the city or town in which they were propagated.
The term is most prevalent in Hindustani music and Kathak dance. Famous examples of gharanas in Hindustani music are the Agra, the Gwalior, the Rampur-Seheswan gharana among others.
Visual Arts
Serigraphy: Serigraphy is a fine art. It is a colour stencil printmaking process in which special paint is forced through a fine silk screen onto the paper beneath. A sheet of high quality, archival paper is first inserted under the screen and special paint poured along the edge of the frame. A squeegee (flat pad) is pulled from back to front, producing a direct transfer of the image from screen to paper: the serigraph. A separate stencil is required for each colour in each serigraph. Today, silk is commonly substituted by the cheper and stronger nylon.
