"Ganga is a strange obsession in me since my childhood, it just like a beautiful woman inhabiting my mind," said filmmaker Vijay Singh who was recently in town to present two of his popular crossover films, "One Dollar Curry" and "Jaya Ganga" at the India Habitat Centre. Actress Manisha Koirala was also present.

"One Dollar Curry", starring Vikram Chatwal, Gabriella Wright and Smriti Mishra, is a comedy film whose story begins with a street-smart guy who goes to Paris. He becomes a chef even though he can hardly cook, and One Dollar Curry becomes the brand name of the fare he offers on wheels.

In contrast, "Jaya Ganga", based on a novel by Singh, is a romantic love story against the backdrop of the Ganga. It is his first film, made in 1996 starring Smriti Mishra and Asli Rais. The protagonists, a Persian writer and two women, go boating down the river in search of mystical love. The films show young filmmaker Vijay's versatility in handling different themes. About his experiences, he said, "Filming in Paris was not so easy as there were many hurdles in getting permission for shooting. So I am going to leave Paris for my next film."The filmmaker, who has also written "River Goddess", is now working on another film "Saya" adapted from his own novel "Whirlpool of Shadows". It is a love story about the nawab of Awadh and a young Englishwoman.
