Masquerade event

Theatre Day celebration begins today.

AT THE REHEARSAL: Scene from the play.

World Theatre Day falls on March 27. Since 2000, Masquerade has taken the opportunity to organise either an event or a theatre production during the week ending on that day.

This year, Masquerade is organising ``Thus Spake Shoorpanaka, So Said Shakuni" written by Poile Sengupta, famous for her works such as ``Mangalam," ``Inner Laws" and others. The venue is the Top Storey, Alliance Francaise.

Directed by Krishna Kumar. S, the cast includes Amit Singh, Gayathri Sreedharan, Shyam Rajagopalan, Prateeksha Chandrashekaran and Neeraja Kannan.

Five shows

The five shows are spread over four days — March 23 (7 p.m.), March 24 (7.30 p.m.), March 25 (4 p.m. & 7.30 p.m.) and March 27 (7.30 p.m.)

As part of the event, an art exhibition will be organised in the coming months bringing together five of India's leading young artists, all of them Chennai-based.

The works showcased at the exhibition will be created exclusively for this occasion and inspired by the play that is being produced.

The art works will be put up for sale. Part of the proceeds from both the theatre show as well as the art exhibition will go towards a Theatre-Art for Nurturing Traditional Art & Culture cause.

`Thus Spake Shoorpanaka, So Said Shakuni' was written by Poile Sen Gupta in 2002 and was first presented at the Deccan Herald Theatre Festival, Bangalore.

It was later produced in Chennai by the late Bhagirathi Narayanan of The Madras Players in November 2002.The just-over-an-hour play revolves round two passengers — a man and a woman — stranded in a transit airport lounge.

The plot deals with the two of them developing a blow-hot-blow-cold relationship as they attempt to acquaint themselves with each other. In the process they play various roles, sometimes contemporary, mostly mythical and end up questioning the basics of traditional beliefs about history and myth.

The play also question issues ranging from sex to terrorism at various level, sometimes humorously and at other times quite relevantly.
