Geetotsava starts today

The Karnataka Sugama Sangeeta Parishat and the district administration of Hassan are organising the Geetotsava 2007, the fifth sugama sangeetha seminar on March 30 and 31.

The meet will be held at the Kalamandira from 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and at the Jilla Kreedangana between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The programme takes off with a procession on March 30, today, along with litterateurs and artists starting 9 a.m.

The formal inauguration will be at 10 a.m. where students from all over the districts will sing the Naada Geete. Rashtrakavi G.S. Shivarudrappa and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda will be special guests on the occasion.

A souvenir "Geeta Sangama" will be released along with the fourth edition of Chennaveera Kanavi's "Hoovu Horaluvuvu Sooryana Kadege".

This wil be followed by group singing by artists like Y.K Muddukrishna, Yashwant Halibandi, Kikkeri Krishnamurthy, Uday Ankola, Vinaya Kumar, Jayaram P. N, Sreedhar Iyer, Chandrika Gururaj, Rohini Mohan, Premalatha Diwakar, Vrunda S. Rao, Surekha K.S., Saraawati Budya, and Aruna Chandrashekhar.

On the occasion, poet G. S. Shivarudrappa will be honoured with a musical tribute by musicians like C. Ashwath, Shimoga Subbanna, Puttur Narasimhanayaka, Ratnamala Prakash and others.

This will be followed by a host of music programmes spanning young talent from the district as well as an instrumental group performance.

On March 31, there will be a series of discussions interspersed with music programmes.

Some of the topics include `Singing of poetry — the present and future', `The various styles of composing light music and the influence of other musical genres on it'. There will also be a special section featuring musicians from the bordering areas of Karnataka.
