COMMENDABLE PERFORMANCE A student presenting a dance recital.

Celebrating Rama Navami, pupils of Kuchipudi Kalakshetra, an offshoot of the Kuchipudi Art Academy established by the maestro of the tradition Vempati China Satyam at Chennai, presented a recital in the premises of Ba-Bapu Bhavan recently.

It got off to a grand start with the traditional adoration Vani Paraku followed by depicting the customary offering of salutations to rasikas. Both were evocatively presented by Himabindu, Subbaraju and Bharathi. Then followed the nritta-oriented number, Vasantha Swarajathi by Swarnalatha, Subbaraju, Anuradha, Raviteja, Chandini and Kalyani .

Solos, Ramayana Sabdam and the Bilhari Krithi of Tyagaraja, Kanugontini by V.V.S. Jagannadha Rao and the popular Tarangam, Neelamegha Sareera by Himabindu interspersed in between, were empathetic visualisations of the various epical episodes as they stand adorably described in the lyrics. The nritta by Himabindu with her feet balanced on the edges of a brass plate proved to be a scintillating embellishment of Suddha nritta to her solo.

The grand finale lay in the sparklingly skilled presentation of Tyagaraja Pancharatna Krithi, Jagadaanandakaraka by all in group in good synchrony with soulful involvement.

Kudos to Hari Ramamurthy, the chosen disciple of Vempati for being the Principal of the Kalakshetra, who imparted masterly training to its pupils and made them devoutly execute all subtle nuances that mark the Kuchipudi tradition and innovatively incorporated in the choreographic studies of his guru.

Expert nattuvangam by himself with equally empathetic vocals by B. Varahalu and mridangam by Kanthilal in the excellent company on violin by K.V.S. Prasad and flute by T. Atchutha Rao contributed to the grandeur.

Make-up by Surya Rao, stage dιcor and lighting by K.V. Ramana Rao and Y. Hanumantha Rao were excellent.

Founder Director of Mihira Dhyana Mandir, M.R.L. Rao who was guest of honour and Vice-President of the Kalakshetra Management committee S. Vijayakumar presented mementos to all artistes.
