Bhubaneswar-based Pavanee Educational and Cultural Trust organised a memorial meeting for India's most revered dance and music critic P.V.Subramaniam, better known as Subudu, who passed away at New Delhi on March 29 at the age of 90. Jnanapitha awardee poet and scholar Sitakant Mohapatra, who chaired over the meeting, felt that "the Statesman newspaper was indeed lucky to have a critic of his depth and calibre". Subudu served the newspaper as its critic for six decades.
Trust chariman Prabhat Nalini Das, a well-known former professor of English who had a long association with Subudu till his death, narrated how he was a man of conviction. "He would be remembered for his constructive criticism.
He was quite uncompromising and yet so gentle in his manners. He was a genuine critic and philosopher of culture," she stated. US-based Odissi dancer and faculty fellow at Carnegie Mellon University Oopali Operajita, who is also a political advisor to young Indian parliamentarians, described Subudu as "the greatest dance critic of Indian after late Charles Fabri". Subudu had zero tolerance level for bad arts, stated the danseuse who has 25 years of association with the late critic. She also presented her keynote address on dance criticism on the occasion. The gathering included writers, scholars, critics and dancers.
