WARMING UP Shobana puts Mahesh Dattani through his paces in alaripu.

Alaripu: In the conventional Bharatanatyam repertoire, alaripu is the first dance composition performed in a recital (though flower offerings and a Ganesh prayer may precede it.). It is considered a warm-up piece, in which the dancer begins with movements of the eyes and neck, goes on to the shoulders and arms, then the legs. It ends with fast rhythmic footwork. The name, it is believed, comes from the Telugu word `alarimpu' meaning the blossoming of a flower.

Jatiswaram: This is a music composition in the Carnatic genre. It is made up of musical notes (swaram) set to rhythmic patterns (jati), hence the name. Jatiswaram can also refer to the dance number based on this composition. Included in the Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi repertoires, it is sometimes performed in Mohiniattam too.
