The befitting tribute to Dhauli Hills came through an exciting Kathak ballet `Mahamanav Buddha'.

Noted Odissi exponent Gangadhar Pradhan hosts a number of popular festivals of dance and music in the State. The just concluded fourth annual Dhauli Mahotsav, a national festival of dance and music at Shanti Vihar on the foothills of the historic Dhauli Hills near Bhubaneswar, is one of the major festivals being hosted by Orissa Dance Academy in association with Konark Natya Mandap both founded by Pradhan.
The three-day event began with a prayer to Buddha (Dhauli is a famous Buddhist heritage site) in dance form by the budding artistes of the Academy. It was followed by Pancha Mahabhuta, a choreographic composition by Aruna Mohanty, who also performed with the senior dancers of the institution. The production was premiered in the recently concluded ninth new national choreography festival in New Delhi.
sBharatnatyam dancer Charulatha Jayaraman from Tiruchi in Tamil Nadu along with her troupe members presented Buddha stutee followed by group Odissi dance by Bhubaneswar-based Lalita Kala Pitha troupe and Bajasal folk dance by Mahabir Sanskrutik Parishad of Orissa's Kalahandi region.
The second evening showcased Odissi vocal rendition by Subhashis Baral of Bhubaneswar, an impressive Kuchipudi dance by the artistes of Kuchipudi Kala Kendram of Vishakhapatnam and solo Odissi dance by Bijaya Kumar Dash and Chinmayee Kar, both from Orissa. The evening also witnessed Odissi dance ballet Bhagabata Leela by the artistes of Utkal Sangeet Mohavidyala and dance dramas Manika Gauduni by Chandrasekhar Kala Mandir, Brahmagiri and Maha Durga by Naba Pratibha troupe of Puri. Odissi dancer Leema Bhol put up a neat and impressive presentation of the complex choreographic composition ardhanariswara on the last day.
U.S.-based Jyoti Rout, the other soloist of the evening, impressed with her `abhinaya' number `Durga'.
The best and befitting tribute to the Dhauli Hills that houses the snow-white pagoda of Buddha, came through the exciting Kathak ballet Mahamanav Buddha presented by Kolkata-based Asimbandhu Bhattacharjee and his troupe of well-trained budding dancers.
The festival concluded with a mesmerising presentation of dhemsa folkdance of Orissa's Koraput region by Jeypore Kala Kendra troupe.
