Power of imagination

Kamala Ramani proved that she's truly an erudite vocalist.

SCHOLARLY PERFORMANCE Kamala Ramani during the concert.

Kamala Ramani enthralled the audience with her vocal concert at Thyagaraja Gana Sabha last week. The event was jointly organised by the Sabha and Sangeetha Ksheerasagara Sabha. She was the student of late Srirangam Gopala Ratnam and continued her tutelage under Dr. S. K. Venkatachari.

She furthered her learning under veteran D.K. Pattammal and then under Hyderabad Brothers. Her presentation of ragas, kritis and swarakalpana displayed her power of imagination and taste for aesthetics. Kamala began the evening with Saveri raga varnam, and followed it with Swaminatha Paripalayamam of Dikshitar in Nata. She then rendered Nenarunchara in Simhavauhini of Thyagaraja with free flowing swaras that enriched the number.

After that she rendered Thyagaraja Vaibhavam in Anandabhairavi, a Deekshitar composition. It is a literary beauty by itself, Kamala decorated it well with nuances.

She then gave a brief picture of Latangi and sang Marivere of Patnam in this. The swarakalpana again was a notable effort. Annapoorne Visalakshi in Sama, Deekshitar's composition was well presented. Pallavi Seshaier's composition Ika Nannu Brova was marked with a good neravu and expansive swarakalana that were at once rich in imagination. This was the main attraction of the show. Sivan's Tamil composition in Kapi, Enna Tavam, and Annamacharya's kirtana Avadharu Raghupati and a tillana rounded off her impressive recital.

S. V. Ramanamurthy on violin and Ramachandran on mridangam lent support. Anandamohan a musician and the backbone of the sabha informed that the concert was arranged to commemorate Sangeetha Ksheerasagara Uppalapati Ankiah.

He then revealed that a four-day festival of Vaggeyakaras was being held from April 20, commemorating Muthuswamy Deekshitar, Thyagaraja and Shyama Sastry.
