Gangubai Hangal.

The Swaralaya Puraskaram, instituted in 1992, will be conferred to Gangubai Hangal. The announcement was made by Justice Balakrishna Eradi, President, Swaralaya.

Hangal is being recognised for her exhaustive contributions to Indian Classical music. She is known for her mastery over the surs and swaras.

Ashokan, General Secretary of Swaralaya said that she is unique as hailing from an ordinary family she has contributed immensely to both Hindustani and Carnatic music. She is known for retaining and, in turn, strengthening the traditional aspects of music.

The award is likely to be presented at her convenience at her residence due to her advanced age.

Born into a family of musicians Gangubai Hangal was introduced to music by her mother Ambabai, a renowned Carnatic singer. But she was soon to become the doyen on the Kirana gharana under Pandit Rambhau Kundgolkar, better known as Swami Gandharva. The award comes with rupees one lakh and a sculpture designed by famous sculptor K.P. Soman. The previous recipients of the award include M.S. Subbalakshmi, Ravishankar and M. Balamuralikrishna, to name a few.
