Two-month summer workshops

Srjan Nrityabasa, the Odissi dance institution founded by the legendary Kelucharan Mohapatra, has announced plans for its annual international summer workshop from May 1 to June 30 on its premises in Bhubaneswar.

"The gathering of versatile and aspiring Odissi dancers from all corners of the globe for the workshop with the Guru and my late father was the much sought after event at our house year after year till his death three years ago. Srjan vowed to continue the tradition to spread his legacy through proper training in dance as he had visualised," explained Srjan director Ratikant Mohapatra who has emerged as a versatile choreographer, dancer, teacher and percussionist par excellence.

He is being assisted by his star dancer wife Sujata Mohapatra in conducting the workshop. There will be two sections in summer course. Section -1 for the students who have already learnt or learning basic exercises like chauka, tribhangi, steppings, and mangalacharana while Section - 2 will be for those who have already learnt batu, pallavis and abhinaya.

Participants in both the sections will be trained in two new composition during the tenure.

Kathak workshop

The Orissa chapter of Samskritiki Shreyaskar, a Kolkata-based Kathak dance academy will host its sixth session of Kathak workshop from May 2 to 9 at Bhubaneswar Kala Kendra.

While beginners, juniors and senior students will be trained from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. daily, senior students will have additional sessions from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. At the end of the workshop, selected students will perform followed by a solo recital by Rani Karnaa's senior disciple Sohini Debnath from Kolkata on May 10 at Jayadev Bhawan.
