Thoughts from Kalam

Book Day was marked by a discussion on `Indomitable Spirit'.

A march for books organised under the aegis of Public Library in which many a writer, poet, connoisseur of literature and habitual reader of books participated and got culminated in a meeting in the conference hall of the library marked the commemoration of World Book Day in the port city.

The discursive talk on President A.P.J. Kalam's book Indomitable Spirit delivered by former rector of A.U. Prof. A. Prasanna Kumar marked the meeting. President of Visakha Library Society, and noted advocate and former Mayor D.V. Subba Rao, chaired the session. Himself besides former Mayors Sabbam Hari and Smt. Rajana Ramani who were instrumental in getting the library concrete in form and functioning also spoke on the occasion.

Describing the contents in the book as the journey of the author from the shores of Rameswaram to the hallowed portals of Rashtrapathi Bhavan, Prasanna Kumar also elaborated on the values, thoughts and ideals of the man, the scientist, the teacher and the role model of a President of the largest democracy in Kalam that find mention in the book as reflections derived out of his discreet and sagacious speeches.

Quoting some of the observations of the author like `Religions are beautiful garden', `Womanhood is the most beautiful creation of God', `Bhakti is nothing but the devout attempt to realise the Divinity within', `Transformation is the outcome of far-sighted vision, innovative mind and guiding spirit', and `No profession is more important to the society than that of a teacher whose life lights many a lamp, and other observations on science and spirituality, women empowerment, art, and the mission of education, the discourser took everybody into a mood of exhortation.

A.R.S.
