CRACKING A MYSTERY: Suresh Gopi acts as Sharafuddeen Taramasi, an encounter specialist, in `Naadiya Kollappetta Rathre.'
Inside a sprawling mansion near Vaikom, a thriller is in the making. `Naadiya Kollappetta Rathre,' directed by K. Madhu and scripted by A. K. Sajan, narrates the story of an investigation into three murders. Suresh Gopi plays Sharafuddeen Taramasi IPS, an encounter specialist from the Railway Anti-Criminal Task Force. Kavya Madhavan is Naadiya.
On a Sunday morning, the shooting of the film is going on at a frenetic pace. Cinematographer Anandakkuttan is busy giving instructions to his assistants regarding the lighting arrangements for the next shot.
K. Madhu, who has directed some of the best-known films in Malayalam that centre on crime investigation, narrates the outline of the story as he waits for the sets to be ready.
Gruesome train journey
"`Naadiya Kollappetta Rathre' is a murder mystery that will be different from my earlier films, mainly due to the way it is going to be made and narrated.
"The inaugural trip of a train, Souparnika Express, which has been flagged off from Chennai to Mangalore, turns out to be a disaster. A few hours after the journey begins, three girls, travelling in separate coupes, on the train are found dead.
"One was a dancer, the second a press reporter and the third, Naadiya. The initial investigations fail to unveil the mystery behind the death. That is when Sharafuddeen Taramasi from the Railway Anti Criminal Task Force, takes charge of the investigation. Things begin moving in the right direction and the film narrates how he solves the mystery. As it is a murder mystery, too much details in the storyline might hamper the whole effect," says Madhu.
Ask Suresh Gopi if his character is as aggressive as some of his earlier heroes, especially since Taramasi is an encounter specialist. "Perhaps he is just as firebrand as I am," he says with a laugh.
The camera closely follows his movements as the unit shoots a scene showing Suresh Gopi walking into a room. As he waits for the next shot, Suresh Gopi takes a break and over a cup of coffee, explains what is that special feature that has made his characters, especially as police officers, so popular. He says that if the dialogues in a film sound different, it invigorates him.
Thorough homework
"As an actor I do thorough homework on my roles. I not only study the script but also plan every moment, even while enacting it before the camera. In accordance with the scene or the character, I shape my characters."
Kavya says she is thrilled to be working for the first time with K.Madhu, whose films like `Oru CBI diarykkurippu,' `Jagratha' and `Oru Abhibhashakante Case Diary' has always fascinated her.
"I love thrillers and more than the suspense in such films, I am fascinated by the way the investigators tighten the noose towards the end. Although heroines do not have much to perform in such films, I am happy about my role in this film as it is a very important one."
Kavya is acting with Suresh Gopi for the second time after `Thenkashipattanam.'
`Naadiya Kollappetta Rathre' is being produced under the banner of Krishnakripa and will be released by Dream Team.
The cast includes Siddique, Rajan P. Dev, Suraj Venjarammoodu, Shammi Thilakan and Suja Karthika among others. The art director is Girish Menon, the production controller is Aroma Mohan and the stills are by Saleesh Peringottukara. The film will reach theatres on June 22.
