Action and romance

P.K. AJITH KUMAR

Director V.M. Vinu says that `Sooryan,' starring Jayaram and Vimala, will be a complete entertainer.

I was told on the set by some people that they were reminded of the Jayaram-Shobhana pair when they saw us act

FAMILY DRAMA: Jayaram and Vimala in `Sooryan.'

Vimala stands out in a bevy of girls who are all sitting on a bed, chatting and giggling. Vimala laughs shyly, as she is teased by the girls. She has to laugh the same laugh a few more times before director V.M. Vinu cans the shot.

It is Vimala's first scene for `Sooryan,' the shooting of which is in progress in Kozhikode, V.M. Vinu's hometown. The next scene is also shot in the same house, on Jaffer Khan Road, and it features most of the artistes of the film - Jayaram, Saikumar, Kalaranjini, Harisree Asokan (who is clean-shaven and therefore barely recognisable), Vayalar Rana, Babu Swamy, Kozhikode Narayanan Nair and Zeenath. "Jayaram and his family have come to Vimala's house to discuss an alliance," explains Vinu.

The director, who is riding on a wave of hits, beginning with the Mohanlal-starrer `Balettan' (2003), says that his latest venture will be an entertainer.

Musical backdrop

"Although I am telling the story with music as its backdrop, it is not a typical musical; there is a lot of action too," he adds. "The film is about Harinarayanan, played by Saikumar a well-known Carnatic vocalist, and his family. He is forced to borrow heavily to meet his family's needs and even has to pledge the house at one stage. Cheriyan (Suresh Krishna), a rich politician and friend of Harinarayanan's son, Suryanarayanan (Jayaram), comes to the rescue of the family, but at a price," says Vinu.

Says Jayaram, "I get to do what a quintessential hero does - I get to fight, sing songs and romance," he adds. Vimala plays Maya, a radio jockey. "It's an interesting character and acting with Jayaram has been a lot of fun; he is such a fine comedian," she says with a laugh.

Vinu, whose last film, `Yes, Your Honour,' celebrated 100 days in Thiruvananthapuram, says, "I was on the look-out for a girl who could look modern and Vimala fitted the bill; besides, I believe in presenting new lead pairs in all my movies."

There are six songs in `Sooryan,' all written by Gireesh Puthenchery and composed by Ilayaraja.

The film, produced by Sreechakra Films, is written by newcomers Satheesh and Suresh. Utpal V. Nayanar cranks the camera, P.C. Mohan edits and the stills are by Paul Bathery.

`Sooryan' will hit cinemas in June.
