Of valour and romance

LEGENDARY CHARACTER: Tarika as `Unniarcha.'

`Vadakkanpaattu' stories have a special place in the hearts of Malayalis. The riveting and timeless tales of valour, deception, chivalry and romance have been transformed into plays, films, songs and poems.

There have been umpteen versions of the stories that have influenced our literature and language. Yet viewers never seem to get enough of the stories of chivalrous Aramol Chekavar and his envious cousin Chandu.

On par with the heroes are the brave female characters like Unniarcha and Thumbolarcha. Now Asianet's new serial `Unniarcha' narrates the story of the legendary beauty and Kalaripayattu warrior Unniarcha.

Lavish sets

Thousands of actors are acting in the serial that is being filmed on lavish sets. For the first time, four cameras are being used to shoot a serial.

Tarika plays the lead in the serial that is being directed by Shrikuttan. Sanusha plays the young Unniarcha who mastered Kalaripayattu along with her cousins. Chandra Lakshman plays Thumbolarcha.

The cast includes Captain Raju, Sriraman, Tara Kalyan, Rajesh Hebar and Meghanathan among others.

Playback singer Madhu Balakrishnan has rendered the songs composed by Girish Puthencherry and composed by Mohan Sithara. Produced by Mathrubhumi Television, the script and dialogues have been scripted by Manoj.

The mega serial will be telecast on weekdays at 20.00.
