An eventful date

VIJAY GEORGE

‘July 4,’ scripted by Siby K. Thomas and Udayakrishnan, has a mix of romance, mystery and comedy.

In step: Dileep and Roma in ‘July 4,’ which is being directed by Joshy. Dileep acts as a taxi driver.

The hero, Dileep, has to be in step with the rest of the dancers and also play the violin gracefully. The camera captures the action to perfection and as the director “okays” the shot, Dileep heaves a sigh of relief. The shooting of the film ‘July 4,’ directed by Joshy, is going on in a modern ‘naalukettu,’ near Vaikom. Dileep and Roma play the lead in the film scripted by Siby K. Thomas and Udayakrishnan.

Dileep admits he is always tense while facing the camera for dance numbers.

“I have never really learnt dancing and it doesn’t come naturally to me,” he says. ‘July 4’ has Dileep donning the role of Gokuldas, a taxi driver who works in Coimbatore. “He is hardworking and honest. But circumstances force him to get involved in a family’s problems,” says Dileep. Dileep is in a happy frame of mind as his Vishu release ‘Vinodayathra’ continues to do well.

“The viewers can relate to the characters and the incidents depicted in the film and that might have worked to its advantage,” he says.

Dileep feels that ‘July 4’ will also find favour with viewers. He adds, “It is an interesting story and Gokuldas’ character has been neatly woven into the story.” “‘July 4’ is an entertaining love story that is likely to appeal to all sections of the audience. The date in the title has a significant role in the storyline and incidentally, it is also the date of release of the film,” says Siby K. Thomas and Udayakrishnan.

The outline

Udayakrishnan gives an outline of the story: “It starts with Sreepriya’s (Roma) engagement. Not many know that the groom, played by Sarath, is having an affair with Sreepriya’s younger sister, Shilpa (Mangala).

“Gokuldas has been appointed as a driver in Roma’s house. Things take an abrupt turn when Sreepriya fails to return home one day after she leaves her house to go for an examination. Enquires reveal that she was last seen travelling with Gokuldas. What happens next forms the rest of the story.”

The scenarist duo is now working on a script for the actors’ association, AMMA, which will have most of the big stars from the industry.

Roma, who is busy getting ready for a photo shoot, says she plays a bubbly girl in the movie. After her debut in ‘Notebook,’ she has been cast in Shafi’s ‘Chocolate,’ which has Prithviraj and Jayasurya in the lead.

Admits Mangala, “It’s a sort of a comeback, as I was waiting for a good role after ‘By the People.’ I play a homely girl who is quite bold when the occasion demands it.”

The whole unit goes outdoors to a large lawn. Green and yellow balloons make the surroundings colourful as cinematographer Shaji mounts the camera on a crane.

‘July 4’ is being produced under the banner of Ananya films. Devan, Siddique, Innocent, Salim Kumar, Cochin Haneefa and Riyas Khan include the rest of the cast. Ouseppachan has composed the songs written by Shibu Chakravarthy. The stills are by Rajesh.
