Starry evening

SARASWATHY NAGARAJAN

The third Amrita Film Awards were given away at a gala function.

Galaxy of stars: Mohanlal receiving the best actor award.

Neither the threat of rain nor delay could dampen the enthusiasm of the huge crowd that gathered at Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram to watch the glittering award function of the third Amrita Film Awards.

Kala Master’s choreography rocked the audience as they danced and sang with the performers. Although the gaffes made by comperes have now become a staple of most mega events, the performers on stage kept the audience glued to the stage and the large screens around the venue.

However, one wondered why senior actors like Seema, KPAC Lalitha and Ambika were not given a chance to say a “few words.” The theme of the show was evergreen songs from Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam.

The performers led by Priyamani danced, waltzed and yahooed their way into the hearts of the spectators. The music was scored by Shan and Krishnachandran while the director of the show was Sohanlal.

Sizzling performance

The surprise of the show was Simran who sizzled on stage with her scintillating dance number. After Udit Narayan’s solo ‘Papa kehte hai,’ he went on to sing two duets with Sujata, including the popular ‘Chilamboli katte’ from ‘Meesa Madhavan.’

The highlight of the show was the galaxy of stars who had gathered to honour and be honoured by their fraternity. The awards were given away in 22 categories. Veteran director K.S. Sethumadhavan won the award for lifetime achievement. The best actor awards were bagged by Mohanlal and Navya Nair while the awards for the best supporting actor awards went to thespian Jagathy Srikumar and Radhika.
