There is a felicitation to renowned vocalist Prabha Atre on the occasion of turning 75



ACADEMIC SINGER Prabha Atre is among the finest exponents of the Kirana gharana

The Shri Rama Kala Vedike along with Swaramayee (a Mumbai-based organisation) is organising a programme to celebrate the 75th birthday celebration of well-known Hindustani vocalist Prabha Atre of Mumbai.

Representing the Kirana gharana, this science and law graduate also holds a doctorate in music. A former assistant producer with the All India Radio, Prabha Atre is also former professor and head of the department of music, SNDT Women’s Universi ty, Mumbai, and former producer-director of the recording company “Swarashree”, devoted to classical music. She has displayed constant innovation and a creative endeavour that has distinguished her from other vocalists, both in the classical and light classical idioms.

Atre has authored academic books on the various aspects of music that are especially relevant to present-day performance. Her doctoral thesis on “Sargam” is a pioneering work on the subject.

Her first book “Swaramayee” is a compilation of many of her articles on music. Her books in English “Enlightening the Listener - Contemporary North Indian Classical Vocal Music Performance” (accompanied by a CD) and “Along the Path of Music” have achieved their objective in helping the global music lovers to understand and appreciate Indian music better.

The organisation will be felicitating her, followed by a vocal recital by the musician herself on June 2 at 6 p.m. at Ravindra Kalakshetra.
