Scholarly and evocative

A. RAMALINGA SASTRY

Modumuri Sudhakar’s concert was engaging till the end.

Splendid performance Modumuri Sudhakar.

Modumuri Sudhakar a music composer of Akashvani, Vijayawada Kendra rendered a scholarly and evocative vocal recital in Kalabharati last Wednesday for Visakha Music and Dance Academy. Sudhakar, grandson of late Paarupalli Ramakrishnaiah Pantulu, is a scion of the fifth generation family of Thyagaraja lineage. Sudhakar who is also known for his Bhaktiranjani, Maatruvandanam and Sangeetha Sikshana programmes put on AIR, mastered the art under the tutelage of Annavarapu Rama swamy.

Getting off to an engaging start with Vaataapi (Hamsadhvani) concluded with scintillating swaram, he rendered the Sriraaga Pancharatnakrithi of Thyagaraja, a composition of K. Krishnamurty (Mohana Kalyani) with aalapana and swaram, Ye Ramuni of Thyagaraja (Vakulabharanam), Pavana Tanaya of Balamurali (Rasikapriya Shadjagraha sampoorna raaganga vivaadi raaga derived put of the 72nd melam) and Telisi Ramachin tana (Purnachandrika). Then he sang ragam, tanam and pallavi in Aadi Taalam in Gurupriya a sampoorna suvadi raaganga raagam, constituted of one of the most rarely heard moorchanas derived out of the 64th melam Vaachaspati.

The expression of Manodharma, the aalapana, neravu and swaram in Rasikapriya and later in Gurupriya especially was an aesthetic and erudite exercise.

Maavuduru Satyanarayana Sarma on violin while proved to be his peer, M.L.N. Raju in particular on mridangam in his following and Thani left an impression of being a sagacious savant.

Rendering of a composition of Ramadas, Nittappa, Jaavali in Surati and a ragamalika of Balamurali provided a splendid finale.
