Haunting storyline: ‘Subhadram’ has Jayakrishnan playing a student who gets involved in a police case.
It’s different from a usual film set. Missing are the many lights, exotic background and crowd of onlookers. The hero and heroine sway and lip sync to the song that is being played on a loudspeaker. Director Sreelal Devaraj’s ‘Subhadram’ is being shot inside the picturesque Maria Park near Palarivattom in Kochi.
Exotic locales
“Once the shooting is over, we will add exotic locales to the background and the song will look spectacular on screen,” says Sreelal, who makes his debut as a director. With a budget of around Rs.55 lakhs, he agrees that ‘Subhadram’ is an experiment. “We have great confidence in the subject and hope to come up with a nicely crafted film,” he says. Jayakrishnan, who made his debut in Kamal’s ‘Manju Poloru Penkutti,’ is the film’s hero. The cast includes Padmakumar from ‘4 the People,’ Mythili, a Bangalore-based model, television anchors Veena and Binta, and veterans Rajan P. Dev, Jagathy Sreekumar, Riyas Khan and Bindu Panikker. “The shooting is being done in a high definition digital format and post-shooting, it will be edited offline. The edited version will be made into a full fledged film, after the required additions, effects and colour corrections are made using various software,” explains Anil Nair, who is in charge of the technical aspects of the film.
“The basic theory has not changed much but the development in technology has been spectacular and we make use of it here,” adds Sreelal, as cinematographer M.D. Sukumaran and his assistants get ready for the next shot.
In addition to a teenage romance, ‘Subhadram’ also has a mix of mystery and horror. Four students are working on a project on ‘life and death.’ Manu, the group’s leader, is attracted to a sculpture of a woman. Soon, he feels her presence wherever he goes. He creates an advertisement campaign using the sculpture’s features and all hell breaks loose.
The picture bears an uncanny resemblance to a girl named Subhadra who was gang raped and had been missing since then. The police question Manu and his friends. What follows is a series of intriguing twists and turns.
Jayakrishnan has acted in two more films since his entry into filmdom and is awaiting its release. ‘Subhadram’ is being produced under the banner of Channel Five.
The story has been written by the director, screen play is by Madambu Kunjukuttan and dialogues by Ajayan Ochamthuruthu. Raghukumar is the music director and Mahadevan Thampi is the still photographer.
The film is scheduled to hit the theatres prior to Onam.
