Malgudi connection

The late Shankar Nag, maker of Malgudi Days, shared a very special relationship with L. Viadyanathan. “In fact, it was magical,” recalls Arundhati Nag. She remembers Vaidi churning one tune after anotherand when he sang “Taanana tana nana re..”, Shankar was thrilled. He not only loved the rustic, quaint nature of the tune, but also the tenor of Vaidi’s voice.

Arundhati says how when Shankar insisted Viadi himself should sing, the composer posed great resistance. “‘I have never ever sung in my life, it’s impossible,’ he had said,” recalls T.N. Narasimhan, the producer of the serial.

Vaidyanathan, extremely soft spoken and unassuming, made his notes diligently and knew exactly how to go about his music. He was unusual also because he and knew exactly what the requirement was.
