Sahitya Surabhi, a literary association is known for its regular literary meets conducted on the first Sunday of every month. The commemoration of its 5th anniversary was held at P.V. Narasimha Rao Bhavan of Jana Chaitanya Sikshana Kendram last Sunday.

Its secretary O. Rajarajeswari Prasad welcomed the annual meeting that was chaired by its founder president Vriddhula Kalyana Rama Rao. Noted writer M. Ramakoti, Acharya Sarvabhauma Subrahmanya Sastry, critic U. Appala Narasimham and the Surabhi’s President O. Appala Narasimham were guests of honour. They were all praise for the association for its qualitative effort in projecting the panorama of the vast firmament of literature in its varied hues. The judicious selection of speakers and the topics of discussions covered works of ancient, medieval and modern periods. Befittingly it stands hailed as one of the very few cultural bodies, literary in particular, which sagaciously prepares a plan and impeccably executes it, they observed. It was followed by a presentation of a Sahitya Roopakam, Lakshmi Narayana Samvaadam. Renowned savants of Telugu and Sanskrit, Sahasravadhani Varthiparthi Padmakar and Pravachana Rajahamsa Mahadeva Mani who stand credited with performing it earlier at other places, presented it. It is a modified version of avadhanam and is performed in dramatic form, sans any stage contrivances including make-up and costume by two persons.

They impersonate different characters imagined to be involved in instantly structured sequences with dialogues rendered extempore in poetic and prose forms, they explained in their prelude. They were sorry that it was misnamed. In fact it depicts an exchange of thoughts of attribution of supremacy of Narayana over Lakshmi and vice-versa by the Dwarapalakas of the abode of the divine couple, Jaya impersonated by Padmakar and Vijaya by Mani respectively. The exercise marked with showcasing of their indomitable poesy in the first 30 odd minutes thrilled all in the auditorium.

Then onwards, they seemed to have wantonly trodden the vista of popular appeal and it gradually tended to look as an unduly stretched skit of sorts. Before it concluded on a very disappointing note, many got vexed and left the auditorium.
