Using the craft of hand block printing, Indira Broker conjures up a world of geometrics, dots, zigzags, squares, triangles and cubes. As compelling as the drama of her block print designs is the palette of colours which Broker uses: purple, shocking pink, burnt orange , lime and banana green, ochre, blue, black, white or red. Much of her oeuvre of saris, salwar kurta yardage, dupattas and stoles blend high drama with subtle sophistication. Yet, Pune-based Indira Broker has had no formal training in textile design. Her beginnings lay in love for the textured feel of khadi and folk art traditions such as Kalamkari and tribal art. Starting from designing saris for friends, Indira honed her skills further. She now has a personally supervised unit. Sophisticated, understated style permeates her exhibits, currently on display at Shilpi, No.1, Gee Gee Minar, College Road, and at No.29, C.P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet.
