Capture of a traitor

A play on the Bobbili rulers.
|
King size A scene from the play.
The department of Culture in collaboration with Samatha Nataka Gurukulam featured yet another historical Bobbili Yudham, a theme shown and enacted umpteen times both on stage and on screen. This subject too is one of those themes o
f exploitation of the Indian rulers - two warring neighbours – Vijayanagaram and Bobbili. This time the exploitation was by the French who too had an eye on us. Bussy is the representative of the French administration, to whom the Kshatriya ruler of Vizianagaram – Vijayarama Raju approaches for help to settle his old score with the Velama Bobbili ruler Ranga Rao. This play is written by Sripada and Ramanuja Suri and music was given by Ramanuja Suri. The issue here again is paying tribute (Kappam) to the French, which the Bobbili rulers avoided. Taking this as an opportunity, Vijayarama Raju makes a complaint to the French administrator Bussy, who in turn sends his minister Hyder Jung. The army sent by the minister moves on in one route while the commander of Bobbili kingdom Thandra Paparayudu moves into another route, based on wrong information he received. Hyder Jung’s army attacks and plunders the city of Bobbili, resulting in the queens and women folk, turning into widows. They jump into a huge fire they prepare for their self immolation. Rani Mallalamamba leads this hara-kiri by stabbing herself.. On knowing how he was cheated, Paparayudu, branded as one of a few valiant heroes of Telugu land, captures Vijayaramaraju, the rogue, in his tent and stabs him to death shouting ‘Bobbili Puli’.
Subba Rao again impressed with this performance in the main role of Thandra Papa Rayudu. Lakshmi Narayana in another important role of Vijayarama Raju, Jaya Nirmala as Bobbili Mallamamba N. Ravikumar as Ranga Rayudu, M. Kumarababu as Vengalarayudu, K. Nageswara Rao as Dharmarayudu, , Gummadi Aseervadam as Narasarayudu impressed. Former minister M. Satyanarayana Rao felicitated the artistes.
