Worthy heir

K. PRADEEP

Rahul G made an impressive debut as a Koodiyattam artiste.

Illustrious lineage: Rahul G is the grandson of Moozhikulam Kochukuttan Chakyar.

The Moozhikulam temple has a significant place in the history of Koodiyattam. In the past, the koothambalam here used to come alive almost every evening with the rhythms of the mizhavu. It was here that guru Moozhikulam Kochukuttan Chakyar used to p erform Purushartham.

Recently, this venue came alive again when Rahul G, grandson of Kochukuttan Chakyar, made an impressive ‘arangetam’ in this classical art. As is the custom, the Purappadu of the Soothradharan in Bhasa’s ‘Balacharitham’ was chosen for the performance.

Rahul’s guru is his uncle Margi Madhu.

Two-day performance

The two-day performance began with Rahul acting out the famous sloka that begins ‘Shankaksheeravapu…’ Most of this two-hour performance, after the opening sloka, was nrithya-oriented. A traditional performance can be completed only in two days. So Rahul, after the first day’s performance, continued with a Nirvahanam. Kalamandalam Rathish Das, Kalamandalam Anoop, Jinesh (mizhavu), Radhakrishna Poduval (edakka) and Indu G (thalam) provided the accompaniment.
