Top quality performance

T.K. SADASIVAN

The staging of the first part of ‘Kalakeyavadhom’ saw Ettumanoor Kannan donning the role of Arjuna.

Captivating act: Ettumanoor Kannan as Arjuna captured the audience’s attention with his eloquent facial expressions.

‘Kalakeyavadhom,’ written by Kottayathuthampuran, is an outstanding play with beautiful lyrics, exceptional music and a distinctive storyline.

There are many sequences in the play that gives artistes an opportunity to demonstrate their talent.

‘Kalakeyavadhom,’ staged under the aegis of Ernakulam Kathakali Club, saw all the artists contribute their best to come up with an excellent performance.

The acting, dancing and music were of top quality.

Only the first part of the story was staged. The first scene shows an impatient Indra ordering Mathali to bring Arjuna to him as he wants to see his son.

Arjuna accompanies Mathali to meet his father. After meeting Indran, Arjuna seeks his blessings and proceeds to meet Indrani. Arjuna then explores heaven and describes the wondrous scenes he sees there.

Ettumanoor Kannan who donned the role of Arjuna brilliantly portrayed the character.

Storytelling skill

With exquisite facial expressions and eye movements he captivated the spectators. His acting in the ‘Salajjoham’ sequence, accompanied by music in slow tempo, was superb. Kannan also excelled in the last sequence of ‘Swarga Varnana.’

Sadanam Mohanan (Mathali), Thripunithura Unnikrishnan (Indran) and C. R. Ratheesh (Indrani) were the other actors who excelled in their roles. Sadanam Mohanan’s Kalasams were outstanding.

The vocal recitals by Kalamandalam Babu Namboodiri and Kalamandalam Rajeevan were good.

Kalamandalam Krishnadas on the chenda and Kalamandalam Prakasan on the maddalam contributed a lot to make the performance a remarkable one.
