SPRUCED UP: The gopuram of Sri Tyagaraja temple.
Sri Thyagaraja Vidwath Samajam in Mylapore, which has saint Tyagaraja as its deity, has an ambience that matches the serenity and godliness of a temple. The samajam was established in 1929 by Tiger Varadhachariar, Harikesanallur Muthaiah Bhagavath
ar, T.L.Venkatrama Iyer, Prof. Parur Sundaram Iyer (violinist), Kumbakonam Rajappa Iyer, P. Ramachandra Iyer and Venkatrama Iyer, all illustrious men of music.
The Mahakumbabhishekam of Tyagaraja’s shrine was performed on June 17. Ganapathi Homam and Navagaraha Homam were conducted and Mylai Sivarchaga Thirumani K.Muthusegara Sivachariar performed the holy ceremony, in the presence of its president B.Rajam Iyer, vice-president S.R. Janakiraman, secretaries K.V.Ramanujam and Parur M.A.Krishnaswamy and treasurer Kanagasabesan Nagarajan. V.P.Rajaraman and committee member R.Madhavan (both sons of Mannargudi Sambasiva Bhagavathar) were also actively involved.
The event, sponsored by Nalli Kuppusami Chetti, was attended by few of the contemporary musicians. ‘’Sad,” commented a rasika. “After all, they earn name and fame by singing his songs,” he added wistfully. The annual Tyagaraja aradhana celebrations with all the associated religious rituals and social events, like singing of pancharatna kritis, aradhana, procession of the portrait of Saint Tyagaraja and Anjaneya Utsavam are conducted regularly each year.
