Smart act

Sharmila Mandre believes ultimately it is her performance that counts

MODELLING ROUTE Sharmila Mandre proved her versatility with her debut in Sajani

Though the response to her debut film “Sajani” was lukewarm, Sharmila Mandre did receive acclaim for proving that she is capable of adapting to versatile roles. Sharmila hit the silver screen in a remake of the Hindi film “Doli Saja ake Rakhna”, opposite Sammir Dattani, popularly known as Dhyaan in the Kannada film industry.

Coming from a family of producers and distributors, entering tinsel town was not difficult for Sharmila. She says she was determined to become an actor right from her childhood.

The brown-eyed girl admits that her family background gave her the initial push but believes that to eventually establish herself, only performance matters.

“There are innumerable people who saw my first film. They do not know anything about my family and their close links with the film industry. Therefore, the only thing that counts for them is my acting skills and my potential to do justice to the character.”

“Sajani” was her first film, but it was not her first experience in front of the camera. In college she worked for several modelling agencies. She says working for a modelling agency is very different from acting. “It only gives courage to face the camera. Acting, dialogue delivery and dancing is a different ballgame. But I did not face much difficulty in acting, since I have done an acting course from London.”

Sharmila says acting courses abroad are different from those in India but the technical aspects are the same. She says it helped her overcome her initial nervousness.

She is right now shooting for her next film “Krishna” with Ganesh. She says she has not chosen acting in search of fame, but because she believes in it. “No doubt fame and glory are part of filmdom, but beyond that, self-satisfaction is needed.” Speaking about her new film, Sharmila says she plays the character of a simple girl, and shares the screen with actress Sanjana Gandhi.

“I have an equal part in the film. I am really happy with the kind of character given to me. Working with Ganesh is an awesome experience. There is a lot I learn from my films.”
