A lecture and a music concert marked the ‘Vaggeyakara’ fete.

An enlightening lecture by T.K.V. Raghavan on Thyagaraja last Sunday evening marked the last three days of the five-day Vaggeyakara fete of Andhra Music Academy. Quoting excerpts from compositions of the Vaggeyakara, he explained how they stand as ex
plicit expositions of the ‘Raamaavatharam’ embedded in the Vedas, Puranas and Ithihasas.
He also explained how the Vaggeyakara in the simplest possible idiom of colloquial Telugu and Sanskrit with utmost economy in the usage of words, derived exalted expression of the multivalent observations contained in them.
The day started with a recital of Thyagaraja Divyanama sankeertans by G. Sarada Subrahmanyam and party followed by a recital of Lalgudi Pancharatna kritis by D.V. Mohanakrishna.
Vocal concert by Nedunuri Krishnamurty turned out to be a showcase of acme of scholarship he achieved in artful exposition of Carnatic music. Rendered along with his prime disciples, the Malladi brothers with Sriram Parasuram on violin, K.V. Prasad on mridangam and V. Gopalakrishna on ghatam (all from Chennai), it provided a thrilling finale of the day.
Vocal recitals in the usual katcheri bani by K. Lahari and party followed by that of Sangeetha Sivakumar in the company of R.K. Sriramkumar on violin and Manoj Siva on mridangam (all from Chennai) marked the next evening dedicated to Syama Sastry. Similar vocal recital by Manda Sudharani along with her guru Ivaturi Vijayeswara Rao on violin and K. Sadgurucharan on mridangam marked the beginning of the last day of the fete dedicated to Muthuswamy Dikshitar. Veena recital by Pudukottai R. Krishna Murty along with explanatory commentary by himself, invigorating support on another veena by his wife Padma in the excellent company of V.V. Ramanamurty on mridangam marked the grand finale of the entire fete.
